P5 Team 2016-2017

Check out our latest newsletter and the P5 yearly overview on the Newsletter and Overview page of this blog. http://blogs.tisa.az/p5/newsletters/

We are looking forward to meeting everyone in person at Back to School Night on Thursday. In the meantime you can read some introductions to our team below.

Aileen Young: I come from Scotland where I taught in Glasgow for nine years before moving overseas. I taught in Russia for three years and Taiwan for four years. This is my eighth year at TISA. I am excited about leading my class through our diverse units of inquiry. I also enjoy the challenge being P5 Team Leader. Nigar Jalilzadeh will be assisting me for her fifth year in P5. Many children and parents already know Nigar from the 5 years she spent working in the ELC.

Jim Hammer: I have taught in Kazakhstan, Moldova, Belarus, and the USA. I have been teaching at TISA for several years now, and many of my former students are now students in the Secondary school!  I find teaching to be exciting and rewarding.  Students are unique and creative and approach each day with a sense of wonder and inquiry.  In P5 we hope to lead the students to accomplish their goals with joy and satisfaction. My assistant, Jamilla Mahmudova has been with TISA for three years, and has worked extensively with P5 students. We are both really looking forward to working with your children for the rest of the year

Paula Craft: Originally from the United States, I have enjoyed helping out as a substitute teacher in primary the past two years at TISA. I taught preschool and primary students and specialized in learning support; in the U.S. I’m looking forward to teaching P5 this year at TISA. My assistant is Leyla Rzayeva. She joined TISA last year covering for Natella Khamitova, who is currently on maternity leave after the birth of her son Nikoloz.

Ericka Bergthold: My family and were very excited to begin a new teaching adventure at TISA two years ago. Prior to teaching in Azerbaijan, I taught in the United States and Shanghai for 13 years. I look forward to continuing my collaboration with my colleagues and with families to help our students become world-class citizens. Our assistant, Sevda Rzayeva, has been part of our TISA community for the last six years. We both look forward to a fun and productive school year!

Samir Valiyev: I am from Azerbaijan.  I am  EAL teacher in the P5 team and I have been working at TISA for 4 years now. Before joining TISA I taught in Azerbaijan and Turkey. I have recently become a father to boy called Emil. I am looking forward to a very successful year in P5.

Publishing Party!

Congratulations to our P5 authors! We took some time to share our work with each other and some other students and staff from around the primary school. Everyone felt very proud and pleased to receive feedback on their work from a real live audience.

Summer is Here!

Thank you to all the parents for their support of P5 2016-2017. From field trips and parties to homework and open houses, you have been there for your children all the way. We congratulate the students on their hard work and achievements. We hope families enjoy reviewing students’ learning journeys through portfolios, which go home shortly, and student blogs which are being updated.

Find a link to your child’s blog on ‘Our Digital World‘ page. In the coming months these blogs will be deleted as we switch to a new E-portfolio system. In the meantime, please take the opportunity to download and save anything you want to keep from the blog, like the spectacular books on Sharing the Planet which students have just published. As well as representing a very deep inquiry, these books are a culmination of a wide range of reading, research and writing skills, which your children have developed so far.

Remember a continued good reading habit maintained over the summer will make for a good start in P6. Of course the travels we take through books can be as enjoyable as our summer trips!

A variety of websites for reading are suggested on our language page. Don’t forget perennial favourites:

Tumblebooks- http://www.tumblebooklibrary.com/Default.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f

Raz Kids-  https://www.kidsa-z.com/main/Login (a range of levelled readers chosen by your child’s teacher based on assessment results can be found here)

Students should know their login details for these sites. We can’t publish them on this public blog, but we can note them for you if needed. Just ask your child’s teacher.

Don’t forget our collection of great educational sites on our mathematics and inquiry pages of this blog. Even more inspiration for fun summer learning online can be found by clicking on the photo here:

However, summer is a time for fun with family and learning from real life experiences!

We wish everyone a safe, happy summer. Enjoy all the places you go near and far. For some this means leaving TISA. We wish you all the best and hope you keep in touch. We look forward to seeing everyone else in August.

It’s be a fabulous year and we are glad to have spent it together,

The P5 Team

On Thursday June 8th P5 will have an end of year party. This will include water play. The children will need to bring the following to school:

We are so grateful to have such a supportive group of parents. Huge thanks to Anna, Hyejung, Melissa, Hayley, Leonie, Sam, Nicky, Joel and Sevinj who chaperoned our field trip to the historical museum last week. Our visit to the museum went very smoothly. P5 students had plenty of opportunity to examine some very interesting exhibits and to enjoy visiting the beautiful Taghiyev apartment. The traffic was very busy on our departure and we faced a short delay but it was a sunny day and we had great supervision which made the wait a lot easier. Enjoy the section of photos below. Many thanks to Sam who provided several of these.

Thank you for a delicious lunch served in such wonderful atmosphere yesterday. Everyone left feeling very much appreciated (and full!!).

Homework Activities

This week we recommend looking at the following website: .                                                                                                https://www.pbslearningmedia.org/asset/ate10_int_techovertime/

This activity needs flash and is not iPad friendly but can be used on a computer. Students can use the slider at the bottom to see the room and appliances change over time. They can move the curser over appliances to read about them. Students may want to choose one appliance e.g. the icebox/ refrigerator, and create a timeline in pictures using the sheet in the homework pack. This is an optional task.

Another website families may enjoy is Epic: getepic.com This is a great source of online books. It requires membership but you can sign up for a 1 month free trial. At the moment there is a great selection of books available related to Earth Day.

Novruz Bayrayminiz Mubarek!

We had a wonderful day of Azerbaijani music, dance and culture today with a great assembly and lots of interesting workshops. Thanks to everyone for contributing a wide range of items for Konchas, which the children worked so hard to assemble today as gifts for children at a local orphanage. We wish everyone a restful spring break and a happy Novruz to all who celebrate. Enjoy these photos from today.

Thank You!

Huge thanks to all the parents who supported our Festival of Languages on International Mother Tongue Day last week. From helping to put together a lively assembly celebrating a wide range of languages to classroom workshops which actively engaged students in activities promoting cultures and languages from around the world, everyone involved worked very hard to make the day a success. We are also grateful to all the parents who help us to run a rich and varied mother tongue programme every week of the year. Mother Tongue day was a wonderful celebration of that achievement. Workshops in P5 included: Urdu, Spanish, English and Italian and were greatly enjoyed by all.

As well as enjoying some photos from the day, please note that our latest newsletter, featuring our new unit of inquiry (WHERE WE ARE IN PLACE AND TIME), is now available on our newsletter page.
